Interactive Lunch- Blended Finance for SDG 7: Mobilizing Commercial Finance to Achieve Universal Energy Access Across Sub-Saharan Africa

Thursday, May 3rd: 13:00 - 14:30 - Tejo

HOST: The Global Impact Investing Network, Scaling Off-Grid Energy Grand Challenge for Development

Preregistration for this session is required and is limited to the first 120 registrations:

Despite promising market growth in the off-grid solar sector, only 65% of households across sub-Saharan Africa are projected to have electricity by 2030, leaving over 100 million households without access. To achieve universal energy access in Africa, we must close this gap, which will require a minimum $33 billion in capital above and beyond the market’s current investment trajectory.

This workshop, co-hosted by the Scaling Off-Grid Energy Grand Challenge (USAID, Power Africa, Shell Foundation, DFID, and AfDB) and the Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN), will be a participatory session to explore blended finance instruments as bridge vehicles between the off-grid solar market and traditional institutional investors. Several existing fund structures will be presented as a starting point, but the workshop will explore a variety of fund structure solutions with the potential to unlock critical capital previously inaccessible to the market.

This session will kick-off an ongoing collaboration between the Scaling Off-Grid Energy Grand Challenge for Development and GIIN’s Climate Investing and Blended Finance Working Groups. Over the coming year the SDG7 Blended Finance Working Group will regularly convene key investors, blended finance experts, and clean energy industry leaders, to explore a series of financial structures and instruments that could readily deploy the catalytic capital needed to unlock the missing commercial finance required in the off-grid energy sector.
